I’ve got a 5-year-old AQHA mare that is green broke…she won’t buck, but she won’t go..if I kick her she pins her ears and kicks out, turns her head and tries to bite my foot..she slings her head all over the place and swishes her tail…I can’t get her to trot or canter.  What’s wrong with her?  MCB, Port Republic, Maryland

Is she sore anywhere…?  Have you checked her teeth?  If she is sound and her teeth are not bothering her, she is most likely simply “sour.”  She is running the show, knows she has you intimidated and will not get better without a very positive “attitude adjustment.”  I’m not suggesting abuse, but I’m certainly suggesting you start by putting a chain over her nose and lungeing her…use a whip to drive her forward and the chain to get her attention on a good stop.  Obedience to a request is mandatory along with discipline when she knows what to do, but refuses.  If you don’t think you can do the job yourself, then you probably can’t….get professional help, and I don’t mean a whip and spur rider…I mean someone who understands than confrontation is a key to learning…this mare needs to be confronted by an leader each time she refuses to comply with a simple understood request
