EIA VACCINE

A vaccine that prevents equine infectious anemia (EIA), the disease detected by the Coggins test, may soon be available.

The University of Pittsburgh and the University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research Center published test results in the 2003 Journal of Virology.

A vaccination with a genetically modified strain of EIA virus, which has limited ability to reproduce in the horse’s body, provided 100% protection in challenge studies,  compared with 100% induction of the disease in identically exposed unvaccinated controls.   Previous vaccines were either limited in protection or actually worsened the disease.
