Lunging - Walk, Jog, Stop
Please excuse the noise of our southern Texas wind.

Lunging a horse is about "control"  It does not mean letting the horse tear around in mindless circles. This three-year 0old filly was just taken from pasture.  She is not allowed to run "to get the edge off". Every time you handle a horse it is a training experience.

For forward movement the handler steps toward the hip and drives her forward. He does not look at her head, but focuses on the hip. Her nose is kept tipped into the direction of travel and her body is on an arc. The handler never steps back - or away from the horse. To stop, the handler steps in front of the balance point of the horse (toward the shoulder), blocks the forward movement and says "whoa".
